WHO YOU LOVE/ UNCONDITIONALLY By: Alexandrea van Huizen I've been really into this song ever since John Mayer released his album 'Paradise Valley' in August of this year but my gut kept telling me I should only write about it when the music video comes out. After months of nothingness, the wait had finally paid off when John, with the help of his ladylove- Katy Perry, premiered their video on daytime talk show 'Good Morning America' on 17th December and we couldn't be more in love with it! Check it out below! Such an inspiring video as heaven knows this couple has not had it easy. Not long ago, Katy Perry was married to British comedian, Russell Brand while John Mayer just couldn't shake his 'heartbreaker' reputation. I guess that was probably because he was still looking for 'the one'? Finally, against all odds, they've managed to find their way to each other. Are they built to last, only time will tell. The pair have also collaborated on Katy's latest album 'Prism' as John co-wrote the song 'Spiritual' with Katy and also plays guitar for 'It Takes Two'. Check out the video below for 'Unconditionally' which Katy has said was influenced by boyfriend, John Mayer.

By: Kevin Wiyarnanda It’s an amazing week for music because two of the world’s biggest female singers, Katy Perry & Lady Gaga released their lead-singles from their highly-anticipated albums. But did they get it right? Katy Perry’s new single entitled ‘Roar’ is a song that promotes empowerment and I must say, she definitely got it right! The song has everything a lead single needs: a catchy hook, great lyrics and an excellent message that everyone can relate to! Serving as the lead single for her new album(‘Prism’), ‘Roar’ has peaked at #1 in the US iTunes Store, while it’s sitting at the second position for the Singapore iTunes Store. Behind the success of this song is renowned songwriter Max Martin who has produced hits for artists like Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears. ‘Roar’ has gained quite a bit of negative attention from netizens and music lovers alike; citing that it sounds uncannily similar to Sara Barailles’ song ‘Brave’. Katy has also been criticized for her ‘WhatsApp’-themed lyric video by electronic music producer; Dillon Francis - who claims that Katy ripped the concept of his music video from his song ‘Messages’. I am however convinced that Katy will come up with a whole different concept for the official music video. Lady GaGa,’s new single ‘Applause’ serves as the lead single from her upcoming album ‘ARTPOP’, that is set to be released in November. Despite being leaked online, the single managed to top the Singapore iTunes Store chart and climbed it’s way to number 2 on the US iTunes chart. The song has a signature ‘GaGa’ sound with electro-driven beats, semi-spoken verses and a super catchy chorus. However, the song also sounds a little too repetitive and the pre-chorus reminds me of Madonna’s song; ‘Girls Gone Wild’ from her latest album “MDNA”. The lyric video for ‘Applause’ features a ‘drag queen’ fashion show with GaGa strutting down with a fully painted face. I got to be brutally honest here: ‘Applause’ did not really leave me with the impression that ‘Roar’ did. It might be because it lacks the “feel good” factor that Katy’s song offers. GaGa did it right with the song ‘Born This Way’ but ‘Applause’ simply didn't sit well with me. |
